We love pets, but sometimes neighborhood pets can quickly become pests, which is why many people look for home remedies on how to keep dogs off your lawn. Whether you’re afraid of a stray dog or you have a dog who enjoys using your yard as a bathroom or just likes digging up your prized flowers, it can be frustrating to find a home remedy that works to keep dogs out without hurting the animal or causing your neighbors to be upset.

It’s important that whatever you choose to use will not harm the pet, but also be safe for your plants and of course any children. For this reason, most people do not want to try a commercial chemical based solution since the side effects are unknown or it could be potentially toxic.

Here are a few home remedies you can try that will help keep dogs out of your yard:

Cayenne Pepper: Cayenne Pepper is very strong and spicy. Other than it being very spicy and it burning if it gets in your eyes and you shouldn’t eat more than what you use to season your food with, it’s generally a pretty safe and effective remedy. Most grocery stores sell cayenne pepper powder with their spices, but it is usually very expensive if you go that route, so if possible look in places where you can get it in bulk. Tone’s-Ground Cayenne Pepper, 16 oz shaker is a good value at less than $9 a bottle, you can also get it at bulk warehouse clubs such as Sam’s Club if you have a membership there. Simply sprinkle it around the perimeter of your lawn, reapplying if necessary after a heavy rain.

Coffee Grounds: Coffee grounds is another thing that will work. If you are an avid coffee drinker and make coffee at home, simply sprinkle them after you make the coffee around the edges of your yard. If you don’t drink coffee or think that may take a long time, consider instead buying the cheapest coffee you can find and then just sprinkling that around the edges of the yard.

Use a Sprinkler: This is a little expensive, and some areas may have rules about how often you can water your lawn, especially if you are in a town with water shortages, but a home sprinkler system can also help keep dogs at bay, since they typically don’t like being squirted with the water. If possible, use a timer to time it to go off during the times of day they are most often in your yard.

Build a Fence: So you might be thinking, why should I be the one to build a fence, when it is my neighbor’s fault their dog is in my yard anyway? We do agree with you on that. But, sometimes, the only thing you can do to keep critters out of your yard is to build a fence. Check with your local real estate agent as well as your building zone codes (you may need a permit) – but it could actually be an investment that not only keeps the dogs out but even adds value to your property.

Another nice thing about these remedies as they also not only work for keeping dogs OUT – but if you have a pet, they may help keep them IN your yard as well.
