If you’d like to lighten your hair without using expensive salon treatments or harsh chemicals, then these home remedies to lighten hair are perfect for you.
Have you ever read the warning labels on hair dye boxes? If you read the fine print you’ll see that they chemicals in them are toxic – and most companies will warn that using their product has a risk for a potentially fatal allergic reaction. I don’t know about you – but that’s nothing I want to risk!
Here are some better natural alternatives to hair dye you can try:
Lemon Juice: This remedy to lighten hair is probably one of the easiest, cheapest, and most effective. It gives your hair a very natural lightened color and you simply need to repeat it for a few days until the desired color is achieved. Take 1 fresh lemon and roll it on a counter until softened, then cut open and squeeze out the juice. Mix with a little water and then apply it to dry hair. Going out in the sunlight will help this process happen even faster. Leave the lemon juice in for at least 6 hours before shampooing. Repeat daily until desired effect is achieved. This method works for most colors, it can even lighten dark brown hair.
Sunshine: If the lemon juice solution isn’t the right answer for you, you can get lighter hair simply by being in the sun. Remember however to properly guard yourself against sunburn by using a high quality sunscreen, preferably one that has been tested to be nontoxic and effective against skin cancer. (Most of them may stop a sunburn but the chemical reaction in the sun will cause cancer – so carefully research before buying a brand!)
Honey and Olive Oil: Honey is sticky, but if you don’t mind the stickiness, it can also help lighten hair. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of honey and 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil and massage into hair. Allow it to sit for about 30 minutes or longer if you can stand it. It’s recommended to use saran wrap or other hair net type of device to keep it from dripping onto clothes. Wash out with shampoo as usual.
Chamomile: Chamomile is a herb that is often used for making teas. While it is best to use the flowers from the plant, if you only have access to tea bags, that will work as well. Steep the flowers or tea in boiling water and allow to cool. (You don’t want to burn yourself!) Then apply to your hair and rinse. Adding lemon or honey can help give you faster results.
Helpful Tip: Before you do any of these things to your entire head of hair, try cutting a few strands and testing them first to see what results happen. Everyone will have different effects depending on their current hair color. Testing out a few strands first will help you decide which method will give you exactly the results you are looking for, as well as give you an idea of how long it will take.
