Home Remedies for Yeast Infections
Yeast infections can be tough to get rid of and often recurring, and more and more doctors are realizing they often don’t just cause itching and irritation, but can also lead to some serious health complications as well. Over the counter medications and prescription medications don’t always work effectively in killing yeast, which is why today so many people rely on the different home remedies for yeast infections.
Yeast infections can occur in a number of different ways. The most common problem that is often the most irritating are vaginal yeast infections, which cause a lot of itching, irritation, and even burning sensations for many women who can find it very uncomfortable and embarrassing. However, yeast can often affect not only women, but men as well and even overtake the entire body. These types of yeast infections are often referred to as a Candida overgrowth. Getting rid of yeast overgrowth is no easy task – but often there are many anti-fungal home remedies that can help, as well as making some diet changes.
If you are not sure if you have a yeast infection, it is important to see your doctor, since many people cannot tell the difference between a bacterial infection (which requires antibiotics) and a yeast infection (which usually gets worse with antibiotics). Many people think they have yeast overgrowth when it could actually be a sign of something else, such as an autoimmune disorder or other related health problems. However, sometimes even with the best of medical care, the common prescriptions and creams aren’t always effective, nor do they prevent the infections to keep from happening again. So, the best thing to do is learn some of the different yeast infection home remedies that can help.
Eat a Healthy Diet: A healthy diet is the first line of defense against a yeast infection. It is critical that your diet consist of a lot of raw vegetables and fruits each and everyday. The antioxidants in these foods will help. Some believe that eliminating or reducing sugary foods and starches can also be of benefit in getting rid of yeast infection symptoms, as it “starves” the Candida.If you hate eating vegetables, consider a supplement powder such as Greens Plus which tastes great in smoothies or mixed with orange juice.
Lemon Juice: Lemon juice can work in helping detoxify the body, since a body stressed with too many toxins is more likely to be plagued by yeast. Take 1 lemon, roll it on a counter until it softens, that hand squeeze the juice into a glass. Drink the juice and then follow with a few sips of water – the water will taste very sweet! If you notice any metallic taste in your mouth after doing this a few days, gargle with salt water afterward. You should only drink the lemon juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and 30 minutes before eating.
Garlic: Garlic is a strong antifungal herb that can help reduce yeast within just a few days of eating a lot of it. If you do not like the taste, most grocery stores and pharmacies sell garlic tablets you can swallow.
Cayenne Red Pepper: Cayenne Red Pepper is very hot and also very effective in reducing yeast. Some will mix cayenne red pepper with their lemon juice (that is hard for some though) – or you can just try to cook with it regularly as much as possible. Like garlic, you can also find Cayenne Pepper Supplements which can help you get more of it without the taste or burning sensation on your tongue.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C is also helpful in warding off and preventing yeast infections, and can be often found in foods such as kale, strawberries, oranges, and tomatoes. The more you can eat from natural food sources the better, but often a supplement can be helpful as well. (Though don’t take too many supplements – that can make matters worse!)
Take Probiotics: Re-establishing the amount of “good bacteria” can help your digestive system and help keep yeast away. Finding a good probiotic is important, and the higher the bacteria count the better, as this will help re-establish the ecosystem in your body better. A probiotic supplement will be far more effective than eating yogurt, as they usually do not contain enough bacteria.
If you have a yeast infection that seems to persist, worsen, or doesn’t go away, it’s always a good idea to see a doctor to confirm that it is actually caused by yeast, as well as see if any underlying problems could be contributing to yeast overgrowth, such as hormone imbalances, autoimmune disorders, or other health conditions that may require medical treatment.
