Flies are quite annoying, but fortunately there are many home remedies for fruit flies to help get them out of your house quickly. If you’re going crazy with them flying everywhere and buzzing about to cause problems, the good news is there are many things you can do – and you don’t need dangerous chemicals or to stand around practicing your flyswatter skills.
The fruit flies tend to be very bad in the summer months, when fruit is usually ripe and available. They especially love rotting fruit and yeast, so it’s common to find them lurking anywhere from around the garbage can to places where food is stored.
One of the best things to do is prevent them from becoming a pest. Make sure that all food is discarded of properly and that you do not have any overripe fruit which would attract them. It is also a good idea to make sure that foods like bread and other sweets and starchy items are also always covered, as this can attract them as well. Lastly, keep garbage cans clean and drains clean as well.
Here are some other safe home remedies you can try to get rid of fruit flies:
Lavender: Fruit flies do not like the smell of lavender. It is easy to learn how to grow lavender and keep it growing indoors, or you can also use lavender scented soaps, candles, and sprays as well. Lavender essential oil can be found pretty easily in many stores also.
Jar of Apple Cider: Apple cider is a favorite amongst fruit flies, since it is fermented apple juice. Take a jar and cover it with a lid that has holes poked into it that are large enough for the flies to get into. The flies will be drawn to it and be able to get in, but not be able to get out too quickly. Sometimes keeping it out at night will give better results, since they may be startled by the usual day to day activities. The only bad part about this method is you will have to dispose of it in the morning!
Red Wine: A glass of red wine, with a few drops of dish detergent left overnight is also another good strategy to help get rid of fruit flies that works much like the apple cider.
Apple Cores: Another thing to do, if you don’t like the idea of drowning the flies, is to fill a jar and lid with apple cores, and then once you trap them you can take them outside to release them.
